Meet the newest ressies on the block, or is coop more fitting?

Swinburne Residences welcomes their newest members into the on campus accommodations. Thanks to Swinburne's Residential Advisor (RA), Trent Williams, four friendly and furry chickens have now claimed the backyard of college and they aren't shying away from all the perks!

One of the four new residents, three of which are yet to be named.

From a small country town and the familiarity of growing up around animals, Trent set his sights on bringing a bit of home to university. In only 5 short months of becoming an RA, he successfully got approval for the construction of the coop and with second semester around the corner the chickens had already become an integral part of the res community.

  "The (inclusion of) chickens in the residences would help to develop a stronger community" says Trent "by encouraging residents to take on more responsibility, make connections...This kind of stimulation will help students mental health and give the residential grounds a homelier feel." 
Already, the residences on campus have taken a strong interest to the chickens. Trent explains "The amount of offers he's received to help has been tremendous" and that with a project like this, it's important these chickens are cared for at all times. so the more the merrier! He's organised teams of residences; such as 'the Holy Eggrails' & 'the Notorious chicks', to look after the chickens in weekly rotations.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity during the early developments of the project, to interview Trent. Living alongside, watching the growth of this project has been nothing less than inspiring. I was honoured to have been apart of the trial weekly roster rotations and have grown very fond to each and all of the ladies in the coop.

Beyond the Beach: Bali

and back to blogging? it seems so for now. I've had an exciting & extensive year, well into my second year at Swinburne it's safe to say i know where i'd like my future to go (what a relief) and now it's about figuring out how to turn it into my reality. With great plans ahead, i thought it would be nice to share a little creative of my break to South East Asia.
Hazy, is the best way to describe my memories in bali, booze may be partly to blame for my most recent trip but old dream like memories came to me from when my 10 year old self was walking through the very same streets. 

With different perspective and 8 more years of life, I've had the pleasure of re discovering this little island.

Secrets of Sushi

Growing up in KL, I'd constantly be exposed to a large variety of asian foods and delicacies. So it’s no surprise that one of my favourite dishes is sushi. ‘Sushi’ is a Japanese dish consisting of vinegar rice wrapped in seaweed with a variety of topping bundles within the centre. For my university project i decided to photograph the process of “How To” make sushi, specifically “maki”. I've included; along with my photographs, some handy tips and tricks that i learnt from making 'maki'. This isn't a step by step recipe on how to make sushi rolls but a handy guide on how to perfect rolling sushi of any kind!

Being prepared before rolling is what makes crafting sushi successful, chopping up your toppings before hand and laying out all the ingredients in front of you allows you to give all of your attention to the rolling process. I've learnt that water is an important element in making sushi, it’s presence is involved throughout so i made sure to capture water in my photos. Dipping your hands in water prevents rice from sticking to your hand when spreading rice onto the sheet of seaweed. Wetting your knife to slice the maki helps to prevent the rice from sticking aswell, water is vital.

Good rolls are well organised, the toppings are laid out nicely - here I've laid out three types of topping combinations. Placing the softer toppings closest to me and the firmer toppings; such as vegetables behind them ensures the toppings don't fall out when you begin to roll! Making sushi is fast, rolling (after a few tries) only takes 30 seconds or so to complete and even shorter to consume! It's important to tuck your thumbs under the bamboo matt and use your pointer and middle finger to hold your toppings in place so the toppings are tucked in nice and tight.

Viola! you have mastered the art of homemade sushi!

The Cold One

Under the age of 18 years, I can say that I've seen and experienced more of the world than most individuals my age have and I don't plan on slowing down any time soon. Trying to describe the moments and memories gained from my trip will never amount up to what it felt to live them.
This is Part One of a Two Part series as there was so much content (even though I didn't film the first quarter of the trip). I'm heartbroken to see this trip end, but I'll leave you all at where it all began, Enjoy x

Age: Seventeen

 1. This is actually a really hard one for me. I was born in New Zealand and lived there till I was about 8 after which I moved to Australia, so I don’t really consider myself Australian, in fact I feel more at home in Kuala Lumpur than I do in Melbourne. I guess I’d have to call myself a Kiwi if anything. I’ve spent so much of my life there, and feel a real connection with the land and people.
2. My family has been living in New Zealand for a really really long time. Some of my mum’s ancestors actually owned and were on the first boat of settlers to New Zealand. They were from a wealthy Jewish family in Germany. We also found out that we are descendants of Vikings, which I think is pretty cool.

3. I was raised in a very Roman Catholic family. I really appreciate the life values and love that being part of that religion has taught me, but at the moment I am trying to learn as much as I can about other world religions.

4. If you look at my instagram, you can probably tell that I am loving muted purple tones at the moment. I find them so calming. When I was younger I had a deep infatuation with the colour green. I wanted green hair, and even made my mum die my milk green.

5. I am currently completing year 11. At school I take French, English, Global Politics, Classical Studies, Psychology and Legal Studies. I hope to go to university and study Anthropology, Global Politics or Human Rights law.

6. I am really passionate about learning. I know that is really broad but it’s so true. Not necessarily in the context of school, but I just have such a passion for learning new things. I love learning about current events, history, the way people think, different cultures anything. It just always excites me to have new knowledge and perspectives

7. Always be seeking out new knowledge and ideas. Just read widely and watch documentaries. Its amazing some of the things you can learn without textbooks and teachers.

8. "Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny space you occupy in the world." - Gustave Flaubert. I found this quote on the instagram of one of those insta travel models the other day and it really resonated with me. At my school I know a lot of people who have never even left Melbourne, and some of them really don’t seem to understand how little they are.

9. I hate it when people hate on tofu! If you don’t like tofu you probably just haven’t had good tofu. Also the fact that people always seem to think I’m a judgmental person. Like so many of my friends don’t tell me things cause they’re worried I will judge them but I am actually probably the least judgy person like ever. 

10. Ugh I have so many man crushes. Jim Morrison is probably the biggest. He was so talented at making music and the way he performed was so passionate. Also Sodapop Curtis in The Outsiders…. Actually pretty much all of the guys in The Outsiders.

11. I love Stevie Nicks cause she was so cool and her style was so awesome. I also think Emma Watson is awesome cause she didn’t let success deter her from getting educated and she is actively involved in trying to make this world a better place

12. Trashy teen TV shows like the 100, Teen Wolf and Gossip Girl are my biggest guilty pleasures!

13. I’d love to live in the late 60s or early to mid 70s. Not only was the style completely incredible but it was also a period of great social change. I can totally see myself being involved in freedom rides and mass protests!

14. 3 things I can't live without is Travel, photographs and lavender essential oil.

15. Last thing you laughed about I can’t remember exactly what I was laughing about, but the last time I properly laughed to the point where my belly ached was sitting around eating smoothie bowls with Jessy and Issy. It was one of those silent laughs where you’re gasping for breath and get a real ab workout.

16. favourite instagramer @gypsea_lust has the most amazing travel instagram and every time I look at her feed I really just want to get on a planeI’m also seriously addicted to @mimielashiry ‘s feed and her awesome style. My absolute favourite instagram is @jessybreen . not even joking I always love Jessy’s instagram. I think it’s one of the only accounts I have post notifications on.

17. My greatest struggle is motivation to stay in school honestly. If it weren't for the whole ATAR getting you into university and jobs and what not I'd be out already.

18. what makes me bored? people lecturing me about things they have no knowledge or education on.

19. I think I handle criticism pretty well. I usually get a bit annoyed and stuff at the start but I've become pretty motivated so I use criticism to make me work harder.

13. If i could live in any time period It'd be the 60s! Either in America or in the UK, it was such an upcoming time for both art and music and literature, like imagine being able to experience something like Woodstock!

14. Three things I can't live without, my film camera!, my closest friends and probably a really good chocolate chip cookie, not going to lie.

15. It's hard to think of what I last laughed about, but it's Probably a dank meme

17. I think my greatest struggle right now is being so far away from certain people that I cherish and are extremely special in my life. Not having them there physically with me can be a challenge and a struggle but I totally believe that if you're really special to them and they really love and care about you and vice-versa, distance is not a problem and that if both parties are willing to put the effort and time to work things out, it's fine.

18. I try to always make light of most things, so there aren't a lot of things out there that make me bored, but if I had to choose something, most recently it was a lecture I was at that I nearly fell asleep in.
19. I take criticism really well, and I usually take it as feedback to improve my self growth, as on going improvement. I believe it's all about how you take it. I don't really take criticism as personally as I used to in the past but I take all criticism constructively majority of the time I get it.

The Identity Series

I've been recently inspired by the stories and lives of others (as odd as that sounds).
 I've found myself watching a ton of 'get to know me', 'day in the life of', 'introducing...' vlogs. I've always had this interest in others, I constantly find myself reading Humans Of New York, I like seeing the world from a different perspective and thinking what drives, leads a person into being who they are today.
The Identity Series
Is a creative outlet project I've developed in which I document the lives of people in my life that are important to me. It's a way to get individuals to know themselves, their drives and motivations in life and selfishly to see what draws me to them. I've asked each of them to answer a set of questions to answer well and as truthfully as possible. This is an on-going series, I'll be updating the series (hopefully) every once a week! so keep reading for more x
